Youth Worker - The Foundry

The Foundry is SYC’s purpose-built youth hub, providing a welcoming space where young people can explore the world around them, discover their strengths and shape their futures. SYC supports young people to build positive friendships and strong support networks, develop confidence and explore new opportunities and pathways.
Through our open-access youth services and dedicated youth engagement team, we empower young people to discover their passions, strengthen their wellbeing and build meaningful connections within their communities.

 

We are seeking a highly motivated Youth Worker to join our The Foundry team on a full-time, fixed term (12-month contract) basis. This is a full-time position, with the possibility of part-time employment (four days per week) for the right candidate.

 

You will be responsible for utilising an inclusive and strengths-based approach to help young people to find and seize the opportunities they need to make positive choices and build lasting independence.

The day-to-day activities will include:

  • Building and promoting a positive and thriving community space that supports young people to develop connections and navigate services available.
  • Establishing positive and creative connections with partners and stakeholders to build the capacity of the young people in engaging with their local community.
  • Proactively support operations by backfilling shifts for other program employees (at the same level and with training provided), in consultation with the manager.
  • Contributing and promoting The Foundry being a space of mutual respect, trust, and dignity to ensure a safe, welcoming environment is provided for all people who access this vibrant hub of diverse services
  • Providing services such as holistic assessments to establish needs/goals, mentoring or coaching and monitoring their progress towards their goals.
     

Plan and deliver programs and activities for individuals and groups, while providing responsive, strengths-based support to young people engaging with the service.
 

About you

You will positively contribute to a supportive team by bringing enthusiasm, empathy and a genuine commitment to helping people with different needs or requirements achieve meaningful outcomes.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:  

  • Experience in engaging and working with people who are at risk of or have lived experience such as homelessness, mental health issues or substance misuse.
  • The ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively and sensitively with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiation skills along with the ability to identify innovative and lateral solutions to problems.

 

Key screening and requirements: 

  • Tertiary qualification in Youth Work, Community Services, Mental Health, Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or currently working towards a qualification.
  • Be willing to complete a Working with Children Check and National Police Check.
  • Be eligible to work in Australia.
  • Hold a current, valid, full driver's licence and willingness to drive.
